| Born 1938. Studied
Mechanical Sciences at Cambridge followed by a post-graduate diploma DIC in
concrete structures at Imperial College, London. A founding Partner of Buro
Happold, Ian works mainly in the fast developing field of lightweight
structures. He is Royal Academy Visiting Professor of Engineering Design at
Cambridge University School of Engineering, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of
Engineering, a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers and a Member of
the Institution of Civil Engineers.
A
leading world expert in lightweight structures, Ian has worked on
everything from bicycle design to airship design, fabric dams,
hovercraft skirts, building products and the Millennium Dome - the
world-famous project that became a legend even before being opened to the
public. Ian's innovative design for the cable net and flat fabric roof of
the Millennium Dome was recognised in 1999 by the Royal Academy of
Engineering. Ian and a team of three colleagues who worked with him to
develop the design concept of the Dome were presented with the 1999 Royal
Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award, the most prestigious prize for UK
engineering. The Dome presents the latest manifestation of Ian's life-long
involvement in, and fascination with, lightweight and fabric
structures.
Projects in which he has played a principal role include: in the UK The
Millennium Dome, London; Millennium Tower - Glasgow Science Center; The
Globe Theatre, London. Worldwide: The State Mosque, Sarawak; Fabric dams
for Rheinmain Donau Canal; The British Embassy, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia;
FSH20 Airship; Dolphin Pool Auditorium, Toronto, Canada; checking Calgary
Olympic Coliseum, Canada; Concert Pavilions for the US cities of Baltimore
and Jacksonville; Lightweight enclosures for the Diplomatic Club, Riyadh
and the huge Timber Lattice shell, Mannheim Bundesgartenshau, Germany.
Furthermore Ian's outstanding contribution to the UK through the
Millennium Dome and his other engineering achievements was recognized in
the New Year Honours list with a CBE in January 2000.
